The Practice

Malcolmson Architects (previously Redman Sutherland Architects) have been based in Scalloway for 16 years. The office carries out domestic, commercial and civic projects of all sizes. Designs are contemporary but we also carry out work to historic and listed buildings. We aim to provide a quality service from start to finish; place emphasis on listening carefully to your requirements and arrive at sound designs. We apply for all permissions on your behalf, prepare drawings for tender and inspect the work on site.

Iain Malcolmson

Iain Malcolmson RIAS RIBA

Iain moved back home to Shetland with his family in 2006. After completing his studies at Edinburgh University he has worked in and around Tayside gaining a wealth of experience in the art of design and construction. He is particularly interested in the design of modern sustainable buildings which respond to the landscape that surrounds them. Iain has put his money where his mouth is by building his family home with Suzanne in Nesting on these principles. He is a bit of a creative animal and, when not designing buildings, he is taking photographs, painting and playing guitar and writing songs in a local band.

Suzanne Malcolmson

Suzanne Malcolmson RIAS RIBA

Originally from East Lothian, Suzanne studied at Edinburgh University and worked as a qualified architect in private practice for over 15 years before moving to Shetland in 2006. Working in Scotland, Cambridge and New York has contributed to a diverse range of experience on all types of projects from private housing clients to multi million pound office developments, education facilities and commercial schemes.

A particular interest in our built heritage was furthered when Suzanne studied for a post graduate qualification in historic building conservation and is now an RIAS Accredited Conservation Architect. Suzanne doesn't have any spare time between running a business, looking after a family, and supporting her local community in South Nesting, although after taking up archery she has managed to represent Shetland at the Islands Games. Suzanne hates jazz music.
