We were commissioned by Hjaltland Housing Association to design 6 houses on a site at Greenbank Road in Cullivoe with spectacular views over Bluemull Sound to Unst. The intention was to generate a good sense of community within the development from the day the keys are handed over by paying careful attention to how the buildings relate to each other. The scheme we designed created its own sense of place by clustering the houses tightly together to afford a degree of shelter and to give relatively large gardens to suit the rural environment.
Carefully chosen materials, such as white render and timber from sustainable sources, combined with how the buildings step down the site, compliment the local architecture and, although the houses are unashamedly modern, they are designed to feel timeless. Along with Hjaltand Housing Association we are committed to sustainable design so the houses are well insulated, air tight, ventilated and warm with low running costs.
